12-year-old Alice came to us 3 days before we opened the 2nd care home. Her mother had passed away three weeks previously, and no one in her family wanted her and her sister who shares the same father as her. He died when the girls were very young, and their family was prejudiced against him because he was Mozambican.
Their great-grandmother reluctantly took them in after their mother’s death, but she immediately began badmouthing their mom, treating the girls so badly, Alice ran away after only a few days. She traveled over 30 kms on foot or hitching rides before one person gave her bus fare. Social welfare is investigating the situation and trying to get her transferred to the local 3rd grade. We hope her 11-year-old sister can join her soon at Shepherd’s Care Home.
